ST. GEORGE – Those who have driven by the St. George Town Square recently know how popular the downtown park is for young mothers and children during the dog days of summer as interactive water features attract hundreds on a daily basis.

St. George Mayor, Dan McArthur and the City Council recently decided to add to the attractions at the popular spot with an old fashion carousel ride as they continue to focus on improvements that bring residents and visitors downtown.

“The nostalgia and charm of carousels make them very popular in parks and historic settings in communities around the country. I can’t think of a better place for an old-fashioned merry-go-round than in our historic district,” said Mayor McArthur.

St. George City Park Division crews are busy preparing the site for the carousel which is expected to arrive on June 27. The goal is to have the carousel assembled and ready for operations in time for a special dedication ceremony tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of July 4.  Leisure Services Director, Kent Perkins commented,

“There has already been a lot of curiosity generated by the construction of the carousel pad at the Square. Crews are enthusiastic about this project and we expect to have it up and running by the Independence Day holiday.”

The City purchased the Chance Morgan Company carousel from the Hurlbut Amusement Company in Southern California. The 36-foot classis style carousel, built in the 90’s recently finished a two-year refurbishment process and features over 1000 lights, two sleighs and 30 hand-painted horses. The total cost of the carousel including installation is approximately $300,000 and was paid for through the downtown Redevelopment Agency fund. The City expects the feature to pay for itself in less than five years.

Tentative hours of operation for the carousel are Monday through Thursday 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. and Friday and Saturday 11 A.M. to 9 P.M. Closed Sundays.

The tentative fee to ride is $1 and discounted passes and programs will be available.

This is the dumbest thing that passed the St. George vote since Ben Nickle. Put our money to good use instead of friggen kiddie rides. This is turning St. George into another Neverland and you’re going to see more and more pervs on the arrest web site. Good job St. George City council!

Everyone one of these morons should be turned out of office for such idiocy. I’d like to know when this was approved because I searched the Council minutes on the City website and found no mention of this purchase.

I too, looked for information on how this was approved in the Council mInutes and finally spoke with Marc Mortensen regarding it. He said it was included in the Budget Opening section of the meeting two weeks ago and was paid out of the Downtown Redevelopment Agency Bond. When I referenced the 2010-11 Budget, I found on pg. 311-313 which detailed the Downtown Redevelopment Agency I wasn’t able to discern where the money came from and why it was deemed the best use of the money.
